DETAILS OF NEW BJORN RIIS ALBUM REVEALED AND NEW SINGLE RELEASED

Bjørn Riis - A Storm Is Coming

Fans of Atmospheric Prog Rock will have something to look forward to on the 3rd of May, because that’s the date that Karisma Records will release “A Storm is Coming”, the latest album from BJORN RIIS,  also known as the co-founder, songwriter and lead guitarist of Norwegian Prog Rockers AIRBAG.

And, as a taster of what’s to come, Karisma have today released “Icarus”,  a single of a track from the album, and about which Riis had this to say:

Icarus” is based on a chord progression that I had lying around, and which seemed to fit the more stripped down, rock production that I had in mind for the new album. The title refers to the old Greek tale about Icarus flying too close to the sun and getting burned. This hubris is translated to a relationship between two people where one is constantly being burned for trying too much.

I’m very proud of the vocals on this one and I think we managed to create a sound that’s, at least for me, a bit different to what I’ve done on previous albums. “Icarus” features Henrik Bergan Fossum (AIRBAG) on drums and Kristian Hultgren (WOBBLER) on bass.”

“Icarus” can be streamed or downloaded at the following:

A follow up to 2017’s critically acclaimed “Coming Home” MLP, “A Storm is Coming” will be the third full-length album from Riis, and promises to be heavier, but at the same time more tender, than his previous releases. It is formed of six epic songs, clocking in at 51 minutes, and is built around the central themes of human relations and loss, written as a dialogue between two people.

Recorded at the Subsonic Society in Oslo, and majestically combining the art of rock, prog and atmospheric pop, “A Storm is Coming” was mixed by long-time collaborator Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes, and mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (WHITE WILLOW, THE OPIUM CARTEL).

In addition to Bjørn Riis on vocals, guitars and a wide variety of instruments, the album features performances by Henrik Bergan Fossum (AIRBAG) on drums, Simen Valldal Johannessen (OAK) on keys, Ole Michael Bjørndal on guitar, and Mimmi Tamba on guest vocals.

With artwork by Asle Tostrup,  tracklisting on “A Storm is Coming” is as follows:

1 When Rain Falls
2. IcaruS
3. You And Me
4. Stormwatch
5. This House
6. Epilogue

“A Storm is Coming” will be available in Digisleeve CD, Digital, and two different vinyl formats, which include a limited edition, one-time-only pressing on marble vinyl with an alternative portrait album cover, and a standard black vinyl version.  All formats are now available to pre-order from the following:

Lyrically, “Disconnected” is a reflection on the theme of alienation between the individual and society. An exploration of what society expects from the individual, and the resultant failure to live up to those expectations. Each of the six compositions depicts the state of feeling on ‘the outside’ and out of touch with oneself and those around us.

Tracklisting for “Disconnected” is as follows:

DETAILS AND VIDEO TEASER REVEALED FOR SECOND ALBUM FROM AIRBAG GUITARIST BJØRN RIIS

Norway’s Karisma Records have today revealed details of the sophomore full-length album from AIRBAG guitarist BJØRN RIIS. Titled “Forever Comes to an End”, the new album is follow up to 2014’s highly acclaimed, and award-winning, “Lullabies in a Car Crash”, and is set for release on the 19th of May.
Written and produced by Riis himself, and engineered and mastered by long-time collaborator Vegard Kleftås Sleipnes, “Forever Comes to an End” features guest appearances from AIRBAG’s Henrik Fossum on drums and Asle Tostrup on programming, Simen Valldal Johannessen from OAK on piano, and vocals from the Norwegian singer, SICHELLE MCMEO AKSUM.

A haunting image, shot in Beisfjord, near Narvik in Northern Norway, by the photographer Kjetil Karlsen, forms the highly evocative artwork for “Forever Comes to an End”, and track listing is as follows:

1. Forever Comes to an End
2. Absence
3. The Waves
4. Getaway
5. Calm
6. Winter
7. Where are You Now

A highly respected guitarist within the Internet guitar community, and with his own blog, followed by thousands of fans each week, Riis’s musical journey started back in his very early teens when bands like KISS and BLACK SABBATH held sway along with the heavily guitar-oriented side of the classic rock era of the ’70’s. The subsequent emergence of Progressive Rock bands such as PINK FLOYD, PORCUPINE TREE, MARILLION AND GENESIS, together with genres like Electronica and Movie Scores, also played a huge role in the formation of the nascent guitarists’ musical direction.

“Forever Comes to an End” pays tribute to all these diverse influences. From the dark and dirty riffs of Toni Iommi and Zakk Wylde, to the emotional playing of David Gilmour and Steven Rothery. The melodic and sombre voice of Steven Wilson and Tim Bowness and the cinematic landscapes of composers like Thomas Newman and John Barry. And the whole is brought together by Riis very skilled and very individual touch.

“Forever Comes to an End” will be available in CD, 12″ Vinyl and Digital Download formats and a short video teaser for the album can be seen below and at https://youtu.be/FZ1tXevQrl4

More information about BJØRN RIIS can be found on the guitarist’s Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BjornRiisGuitarPage and on his website at http://www.bjornriis.com whilst those interested in guitar tutorials and equipment related matters may like to check out Riis’ YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6JRXuFfSeZ1AzenPh_krpA

As guitarist Bjorn Riis explains: “Killer was one of the first songs written for “Disconnected”. I had this idea of this ruthless corporate guy who uses everyone to gain success. Sort of Bateman from American Psycho meets Wall Street’s Gordon Gekko. He’s outside, or disconnected from, the rules of our society”.

“Musically, Killer is slightly different from what we’ve done before. There’s more emphasis on the drums, different rhythm patterns and electronic elements, and it really was a band effort, where everyone was contributing ideas and trying out new stuff”.

“Disconnected”, sees Airbag once again team up with long-time collaborator and engineer Vegard Sleipnes. The album is produced by Asle Tostrup and Bjørn Riis, and, as always, the artwork is designed by vocalist Tostrup.

PROG ROCKERS AIRBAG RELEASE VIDEO TEASER AND REVEAL DETAILS OF UPCOMING FOURTH FULL-LENGTH ALBUM

Airbag PR1

With their fourth full-length album, “Disconnected”, set for release on the 10th June on Karisma Records, Prog Rockers AIRBAG have released a video teaser to give everyone a taste of what to expect from an album that takes the listener on a sonic journey filled with lush soundscapes underlined by soaring guitars and soulful vocals starting with the opening track, ‘Killer’, and ranging right through to the thirteen-minute long title track, “Disconnected”. The teaser can be seen below and on Karisma Records’ YouTube channel at https://youtu.be/gG8vNaWnm1g

Without a doubt AIRBAG have mastered the art of creating a strong narrative listening experience by closely tying together lyrical themes and music, and “Disconnected” ventures even deeper into blending musical styles and sounds, which create the unique listening experience that is AIRBAG. The album itself is a reflection on the theme of alienation between the individual and society, what society expects from us as individuals, and our resultant failure to live up to those expectations. Each of the six compositions depicts the state of feeling on ‘the outside’ and out of touch with oneself and those around us. Guitarist Bjørn Riis gives us some insight into the thought processes and musical ideas that went into the making of “Disconnected”:

“The early demos for “Disconnected” were written during a couple of months in late 2014. The idea and inspiration for most of the lyrics, and the title track in particular, came from me realising that I had to make some changes in my life. I was tired of the daily routine, working 9 to 5 in an office doing basically nothing and never having enough time for my family and music. I took a year off and started writing for the album.
We discussed the theme for the songs and gave them a single title, reflecting different persons or ways of being disconnected to society and what’s expected of us and how we fail to live up to those expectations.

As for the music, we have done three albums prior to this and those songs will always be a part of what we do, but you also want to look forward and explore new sounds and musical ground. We talked a lot about wanting to use more electronic elements and giving more room for the drums, allowing them to be more percussive and basically avoid the usual rock formula on all songs. We also wanted to do a more stripped down production and create a more spacious and dynamic sound”.

Formed in 2004 AIRBAG’s lineup consists of Bjørn Riis (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals, bass, co-producer), Asle Tostrup (vocals, keyboards, programming, producer, graphic design), Henrik Fossum (drums), Jørgen Hagen (programming, keyboards) and Anders Hovdan (bass). The band’s music is best described as scenic, epic rock, and with three hugely successful album releases, “Identity” (2009), “All Right Removed” (2011) and “The Greatest Show on Earth” (2013), AIRBAG has gained a solid following and reputation among both fans and the press.

ARTWORK FOR UPCOMING ALBUM FROM AIRBAG GUITARIST BJØRN RIIS REVEALED

Not only is ARIBAG guitarist BJØRN RIIS releasing a debut solo album, but he has also drawn the artwork that will be used for the cover, aided and abetted by AIRBAG frontman ASLE TORSTRUP who designed the cover.

Lullabies in a Car Crash
Titled “Lullabies in a Car Crash”, the album is set for an Autumn release on Karisma Records, who recently debuted RIIS track “Stay Calm”, which can be heard at SoundCloud.

According to RIIS, “Lullabies in a Car Crash”, which will be co-produced by long-time AIRBAG collaborator Vegard Sleipnes and will feature AIRBAG’s Henrik Fossum on drums and Tostrup who will provide programming, is very much a personal album. Like many musicians who work in established bands, a solo album is an opportunity to explore different musical directions that might not necessarily fit in with their primary band’s material. It is an exploration that RIIS very much relishes, and he considers that some of the material he has produced for “Lullabies in a Car Crash” is some of his best to date.

KARISMA RECORDS TO RELEASE DEBUT SOLO ALBUM FROM AIRBAG GUITARIST BJØRN RIIS

Karisma Records announced today that they have inked a deal with AIRBAG guitarist BJØRN RIIS for the release of his debut solo album.

The album, which will be titled “Lullabies in a Car Crash”, will feature AIRBAG’s  Henrik Fossum on drums, whilst the band’s vocalist Asle Tostrup will provide programming. Long-time Airbag collaborator, Vegard Sleipnes, is set to co-produce the album together with RIIS. “Lullabies in a Car Crash” is expected to appear on Karisma Records in the Autumn of this year.

Commenting on his solo venture, BJØRN RIIS had this to say: “I’m excited, it has been an interesting journey doing everything by myself. This is not a huge departure from the AIRBAG sound or format, but it is a chance for me to explore different directions and musical ground that might not have fit the band. It’s a personal album and I think some of the stuff is my best work to date.”

AIRBAG ANNOUNCE LAST FEW SHOWS BEFORE TAKING A YEAR-LONG BREAK FROM PERFORMING LIVE

Airbag - Pressphoto

Norwegian Prog Rockers AIRBAG are set to play three more shows before taking a break from live appearances whilst their vocalist Asle Tostrup embarks on a year-long trip around the world.

The shows will take place on the 24th May at the Progresja Music Zone in Warsaw, the 25th May at the Klubie Studio in Krakow and a newly announced show is set for the 14th June at the John Dee in Oslo, where they will be joined by Karisma Records label-mates FATAL FUSION. “It’s something that Asle and his girlfriend have been planning for a long time” commented the band, “and finally they are able to do it. It’s the journey of a lifetime and we will hopefully be receiving updates on his progress throughout their trip”.

It is expected that the band will start performing live again towards summer/autumn 2015, and in the meantime they will begin working on new material for their next album. According to AIRBAG, even their vacationing vocalist will be participating in the process thanks to modern technology. The band have also hinted that there will be some interesting news coming up soon, but have given no indication yet as to what this will be about.

AIRBAG’s third full-length album “The Greatest Show on Earth”, was released at the end of last year on Karisma Records, and demonstrates an edgier side of the band, with the inclusion on some heavier passages. However, AIRBAG’s musical craftsmanship is still very much to the fore with a trademark sound that encompasses massive walls of sound, ambient textures and soulful soundscapes. The band’s lineup consists of Bjørn Riis (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals, bass, co-producer), Asle Tostrup (vocals, keyboards, programming, producer, graphic design), Henrik Fossum (drums), Jørgen Hagen (programming, keyboards) and Anders Hovdan (bass).
